Yesterday was the UFC 99 card that included the fight of Rich Franklin vs Wanderlei Silva and the undefeated Heavyweight Cain Velazquez vs Cheick Kongo. Both fight looked very interesting and went to the distance . The judges saw the Franklin and Velazquez win the fight. Even when critize I like better the decisions at the UFC than in boxing. Sure sometimes they put some boxing judges to score some MMA fight which of course is terrible, but in boxing you see so many bad scorecards is insane.
That's what happened on the Cotto Fight. But first was the Puerto Rican Champ Ivan Calderon vs Rodel Mayol. On the Fifth round Calderon suffer a cut that was caused by an accidental head butt. Then on the sixth it was stop by the medic and they went to the scorecards. Judges declare a draw. Then came the Cotto Fight, and the same thing happend. On the first round Cotto manage to land a solid jab that scored him a knocked down giving him a 10-8 round, but on the third he suffer again a cut over his left eye due to an accidental headbutt (Whats up with that ??). Anyway it was clear that he couldn't see that well from that eye, and Clottey started to land the most sharper punches of the match. He also had a very tight defense that made Cotto's punch lose some effectiveness.
It was clear that Clottey had a big edge now and he didn't took enough advantage of it. I think he felt he was winning by a lot and gave some rounds to Cotto. In the end it was a very close match and I think Cotto won a close decision, but the judges that gave the fight to Cotto wern't paying attention giving him the fight by a wide margin which wasn't the case. I think Clottey just gave this match away and if he was more aggressive he could have knocked Cotto down (Easier said than done when Cotto was landing better when Clottey started to be aggressive).
The truth of the story is that Cotto showed to have more heart than Clottey (Specially after he started complaining when he fell to the floor and injured his knee or something, with the shot on the back of the head, and then in the last round from a low punch). All of those did happened but he tried to make them look worst than what they really where with his bad acting.
I think they should have stop the fight by round 5, and not risk a worst cut that could ended in a worst injury, but I guess he has a big heart (EGO perhaps) and wanted to continue. The best thing that will come out about this is that people again saw him in trouble and now a fight with Pacquiao could come shortly (As early as this november). That would be a great fight to watch, althou I would have love to see Pacquiao kill Mayweather, but Floyd is kind of scared of the big boys so he probably will fight Ivan Calderon next (Ivan is so small that it won't be that interesting of a match, even thou Calderon have some great skills).
Only time will tell, but we have some good matches coming up. I can't wait to see UFC 100, that's gonna be a great card.
